Clearly includes the same web clipping technology Evernote already had, but adds another key function: Cleaner reading of web pages on the desktop. In fact, its very similar to the Reader function in Apple's Safari browser because it removes everything from a web page except for the content and then presents it in a clean, easy to read format.

    [...]

This add-on won't help you save web content for offline use if you're already reading it on a mobile device, but it's superb for saving web pages from the desktop for later reading on a mobile. The pages are saved as standard notes in the Evernote client, which is available on nearly all mobile devices.

Lately I've been using Clearly quite extensively in Chrome while doing research, different than Mr. Tofel though. I highlight the most interesting part or the introduction, and save the clipping into Evernote where I sort it into notebooks and tag it.

It also saves the URL of the article and so it's a bit like bookmarking tool on steroids: it also keeps the quotes. All in all, I am pleased.

Take a look at it here, and give it a test run.

Moon: With your studies on gender similarities in math performance, has there been an increased awareness among parents and teachers on the stereotype that girls have lesser mathematical ability? How have you or others been getting the word out?

Hyde: We've been doing our best to get the word out. The findings in the 2008 Science article received massive media coverage, including newspapers, online sources, and TV. Journalists in other nations covered it as well. We received many emails from parents and teachers saying how much they appreciated the research. Nonetheless, stereotypes are resistant to change, for reasons documented by social psychologists. Even in the most recent waves of data collection, parents still estimate higher math ability for their sons than their daughters. We have to keep plugging away at getting the science out to the public.

How can it be that girls are still perceived as less talented in math and science than boys? Or even worse: as less capable of learning what is needed for a career as engineer or physicist?

Shouldn't we have overcome this by now?

SCVNGR’s playdeck tries to break down the game mechanics into their constituent parts. Some elements are as basic as “achievements,” “status,” and “virtual items.” But there are also more complex ones such as the “appointment dynamic” (a player must return at a specific time and perform an action to get a reward, like in Farmville), “free lunch” (a player gets something because of the efforts of other people, like in Groupon), “fun once, fun always” (a simple action that maintains a minimum level of enjoyment no matter how many times you do it, like Foursquare’s check-ins), and “cascading information theory (give out information in the smallest dribblets possible to keep players guessing and moving forward).

While doing my research on the matter, I found the play deck highly useful. Since we're not building games here, the items on the list do not match 100% but they serve as an excellent inspiration.

For our use I took the document and turned it into a slide deck for printing and playing. You can find it here.

After I presented the new game mechanic features we have in the pipeline for the Qt Developer Network during our project fair on Monday, I received a good question. I had mentioned that the principles we apply mostly cater to men.

So, why did you give up on the ladies?

    Well, I didn't.

Thing is however that our audience consists to a very large degree of men and to make things work for them, we have to cater to their needs and expectations. Needless to say that the ones of a computer engineer in his thirties may differ from the ones of a designer in her forties.

On the other hand, it can be much easier to deal with a community that is relatively homogeneous in that regard.
